Ostlänken - with travel center at Skavsta
Through the Skavsta area, the new double-track railway Ostlänken and Skavsta Travel Center are being built. The image is a conceptual rendering of Skavsta Travel Center.
Ostlänken is being built by the Swedish Transport Administration, from Järna in the north to Linköping in the south. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in Gerstaberg (Järna) on November 6, 2024. According to the Swedish Transport Administration's plans, the entire Ostlänken route is scheduled to open for traffic in 2035. The Skavsta Travel Center is expected to be completed in 2032.
Easier transfers between train, bus, and plane
With a railway through Skavsta and a travel center centrally located near Stockholm Skavsta Airport, accessibility will increase, travel times will be shorter, and transfers between train, bus, and plane will be easier.
At Skavsta, Ostlänken will connect with a branch line from central Nyköping. A travel center is being built in close proximity to the airport terminal at Stockholm Skavsta Airport. The railway has therefore been positioned as close to the airport terminal building as possible to facilitate smooth transfers. In connection with the railway construction, roads will also be rerouted and traffic flows into and out of the Skavsta area will change.
Overall, Ostlänken and new roads will improve accessibility for those who operate and work in Skavsta, as well as for travelers getting to and from the area.
What's happening now?
Preparatory work is already underway in the area, and adaptations are being made within Stockholm Skavsta Airport's environment to enable the construction of Ostlänken. Among other things, preparations are being made for the relocation of the current long-term parking (P3). The Swedish Transport Administration has carried out remediation and excavation on the upper part of the current parking area. Hangars in the nearby area are being demolished to make way for a new long-term parking facility. The new parking facility is expected to be completed by autumn 2025 and will initially include approximately 800 parking spaces. The red marking on the map below shows the area for the new long-term parking.

Developing Skavsta Travel Center and connecting terminals for bus, rail, and air is a collaborative effort between Stockholm Skavsta Flygplats AB, the Swedish Transport Administration, Region Sörmland, and Nyköping Municipality.
The railway is being built in stages. For the section through Skavsta, the Swedish Transport Administration expects to have a contractor agreement finalized by August 2025. Construction is estimated to begin in 2026.
